Be it dropped in the ocean, dropped in the loo (very common), had beer spilled on it, or put through the washing machine. In areas of high humidity, many phones are technically ‘water damaged’ due to sweat seeping in. A single drop of water can cause all sorts of phone maladies. Any trace of moisture or corrosion in your phone will void your warranty.
Here is a guide on what to do when your phone gets wet;
- Switch your phone off (if it already hasn’t turned off)
- Do not attempt to switch it on or use it. If you do, you may short all the circuits and destroy the phone.
- Remove the battery (you may need to buy a new one)
- If dropped in seawater, flush it with fresh water
- Gently remove as much water as possible
- Get it to a phone repairer immediately
Do not persist using the phone even if it ‘seems okay’, as corrosion spreads slowly. Also, don’t be tempted to put the battery back in as this will cause electrolysis.
Remember that your phone is a delicate electronic device and needs to be treated as such, as phones are definitely not waterproof.
I have successfully repaired many phones which have been through a full cycle of a washing machine. On the other hand, a drop of moisture in the wrong spot can be terminal. Even if your phone is a lost cause bring it in for proper recycling, as phones contain poisonous chemicals and should not go in the bin.
Following these steps will more than likely save your phone from a watery grave !
